Strange Sonars

electroacoustic (mono mix for shortwave) (2017)

Duration: 10′

Program Note

Strange Sonars imitates the sound of sonar, which is used underwater to detect potential dangers. Blasts from organ pipes pulse slowly against recordings of US presidents reciting the oath required for inauguration. These voices of men granted, via democratic elections, extraordinary potential for good or evil, were mixed especially for shortwave to be reminiscent of a de-tuned shortwave sideband. Their voices bend in and out of the sonar-like organ blasts as a warning for all of potentially dangerous political waters.

Strange Sonars was created collaboratively in 2017 by Linda Dusman and Alan Wonneberger in Baltimore, MD, and was premiered at the Short Waves / Long Distance Festival in 2017.
