percussion quartet (2013)
Duration: 7:30
Program Note
In the summer of 2012 I was cleaning up my back yard, where a number of discarded water-diverting tubes had found a home. When I threw them on a pile, they sounded magnificent. Experiments with the tubes revealed a number of interesting possibilities for use as a percussion instrument, and working with Tom Goldstein and Umbilicus, an extraordinarily imaginative percussion quartet, forwarded the creation of the “subterraneaphone.” I am indebted to Rich Lipscher, a master lutier, for assistance with design and fabrication of the instrument.
